Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi, two major cities in Kerala, experienced scorching temperatures today, setting new records amidst a relentless heatwave gripping the region.

In Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city, the mercury soared to an unprecedented 36.7℃, breaking the previous record of 36.3℃ set on May 5, 1998—marking a significant milestone after 26 years of observations that began on January 14, 1949.

Meanwhile, in Kochi, temperatures reached a staggering 38.0℃, shattering the previous record of 36.8℃ recorded on May 10, 2016. This new high comes after 8 years since observations began on May 23, 1999.

The intensifying heatwave has raised concerns among residents and authorities alike, highlighting the impact of climate change in the region. The prolonged and extreme heat poses risks to public health and emphasizes the urgent need for climate adaptation measures.

Local authorities are advising citizens to take precautionary measures such as staying hydrated, seeking shade, and avoiding outdoor activities during peak sunlight hours. The record-breaking temperatures serve as a stark reminder of the accelerating effects of global warming and the necessity for concerted efforts to mitigate climate-related risks.
